In Memoriam
Dr. Gerald May 1940-2005
Dr. Gerald May, Shalem's Senior Fellow in Contemplative Theology and Psychology died in April 2005 at the age of 64 after a lengthy illness. Well-known for his writings on psychology and spirituality, Jerry authored numerous articles and books over the span of 35 years, including Addiction & Grace, Will & Spirit, The Awakened Heart, and most recently, Dark Night of the Soul. He joined the Shalem staff first as an associate in 1973, then as a full-time staff member in 1983. From 1983 to 2005, he served Shalem as Director of Spiritual Guidance, as Director for Research and Program Development, and finally as Senior Fellow in Contemplative Theology and Psychology. As Director of Spiritual Guidance and part of Shalem's core program staff, Jerry taught and mentored thousands of men and women who were seeking to deepen their own spiritual hearts. "He has touched the lives of so many," said the Reverend Donald Krickbaum (former Dean of Trinity Cathedral in Miami, Florida), "and opened doors to God that we did not even know were there until he pointed the way. All of our lives have been deeply moved by his wisdom and his closeness to the Holy."
