Clergy are participants in all of Shalem's extension programs. Each of the other programs includes a dimension of personal spiritual deepening. Each, except the Personal Spiritual Deepening Program, also has a special ministry focus: spiritual direction, leadership of groups and retreats for prayer and meditation.
The special focus of this program is the spiritual life and leadership of congregational clergy. While there may be a certain overlap in readings and certainly in contemplative orientation, each of the programs is distinct, and many people are graduates of more than one program. They need be taken in no particular order. What is most important in your discernment is which program is right for you at this particular time in your life. If you choose the Clergy Spiritual Life and Leadership: Going Deeper program, consider whether certain members of your congregation, including one or more in your lay listening group, may be called and encouraged to participate in one of the other Shalem extension programs while you are participating in the congregational clergy program. This could augment the spiritual leadership resources available in your congregation as well as provide support for you.
