Bill Dietrich, Executive Director

Bill has been Shalem's Executive Director since July 2006 and was Shalem's Co-Executive Director for the preceding three years.  He is a member of Bethesda (MD) Friends Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), is a longtime spiritual director and retreat leader, and teaches in several of Shalem's extension and regional programs.

Bill joined Shalem's full-time staff in May 2001 as a Program Staff member and Director of Finance until his appointment as Co-Executive Director in December 2002. From 1994 to 2001, he served on Shalem's adjunct staff for both extension and regional programs. He has completed Shalem's Spiritual Guidance and Leading Contemplative Prayer Groups & Retreat Programs.  Bill served on Shalem's Board of Directors from 1990 until 2000.

Bill is a native Washingtonian and holds a BSBA degree from Georgetown University. His prior professional experience includes co-founding two entrepreneurial business ventures, serving as chief financial officer for a publicly held pharmaceutical manufacturer, and over 12 years as a CPA in public accounting. Since 1986 he has served on the Board of Trustees of the Ariel Mutual Funds where he chairs their audit committee and serves on the executive committee. Bill is also on the Board of Trustees for the Scottish Widows Investment Partnership Global Emerging Markets Fund.  

Bill is active as a member and director of the Silver Spring Zendo, One Heart Sangha—an interfaith Zen community in the DC suburbs—and is former president of the Zen Community of Baltimore, Clare Sangha.  He has a passion for gardening and also enjoys hiking, playing golf with his wife and kids, and taking long prayer walks with his dog, Berkeley.
