Martha Campbell
Martha, a licensed psychologist, spiritual director and retreat
leader, joined the Shalem staff in 2003 as director of Shalem's
Spiritual Guidance Program.
Originally from Ohio, she has a BA in elementary education from St.
John College of Cleveland and taught for several years as part of the
Roman Catholic religious community, the Sisters of St. Joseph of
Cleveland. She also has an MA in religious studies from Mundelein
College and a doctoral degree in applied clinical psychology from the
Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology.
As a licensed clinical psychologist, Martha ministered at the House of
Affirmation, a residential program in Hopedale, Massachusetts, and at
the Danielsen Institute, a mental health clinic and pastoral counseling
center at Boston University. At the Danielsen Institute, she
served as educator, supervisor, clinician and clinic leader, where she
sought to lead through a collaborative model. She also was a member of
the adjunct faculty at Boston University’s School of Theology and
taught a graduate level course in the Psychology of Mysticism.
She is a graduate of Shalem's Spiritual Guidance and Leading
Contemplative Prayer Groups & Retreats Programs.
Throughout her life, Martha has pursued an interest in the interface
between psychology and spirituality. Following her soul’s
purpose, she entered the Carmelite Order and lived the Carmelite
contemplative life for seven years. She also was a member of the
retreat team at Bon Secours Spiritual Center in Marriottsville, MD,
where she provided spiritual direction and facilitated
workshops/retreats. Her teachers include both two-legged and
four-legged creatures—especially cats!—and presently she is living a
contemplative lifestyle in Silver Spring, Maryland.
